R U OK Everyday?

Back to Latest News & Updates

By now we are probably all familiar with the concept of RU OK Day. Simply put, it’s a day dedicated to checking in with those around you to offer them an opportunity to talk, show them that they are valued and cared about and reinforce meaningful connections. It doesn’t take much and the RU OK Day tagline sums it up perfectly – “A conversation could change a life”.

Right now, more than ever before, it is so important that we maintain these meaningful connections on a regular basis. There is no getting away from the fact that we are struggling. Whether you’ve been lightly scratched or deeply burnt by the impacts of our current situation, whether your mood, routine or daily activities have changed, or more significantly, your livelihood, your relationships or your security have been altered, this year has been like no other and I’m yet to meet someone that it hasn’t been impacted in some way, shape, or form. And if you’ve noticed that your capacity for emotional energy is smaller – you’re not alone. While our world may be smaller, I think across the board we are all feeling more flat, tired and fatigued by the current situation meaning we need to invest more into ourselves to keep positive, motivated and engaged with our lives. We may feel as though we have less of ourselves than normal to give to others.

Currently there is a lot that is out of our control. But one thing we can and do have control over, is our ability to connect with others. Something that has certainly been highlighted this year is how important it is to reach out to those around you, and we are lucky to have an ample amount of technology to enable us to do this! Now I know that we are probably all tired of Zoom calls, and it will never replace the real deal of face-to-face human contact, we are fortunate that there are still so many other ways to check in with others whether it is via Zoom, or text messages, phone calls, emails, social media, the list goes on….And while it might seem more effortful and it is normal to have days where you just don’t have the capacity to invest emotionally in someone else, I encourage you to find a time and space where you can do this, because I guarantee it will not only impact the person you are reaching out to, but it will also influence and replenish your own emotional energy bank. And if we were to do this regularly, not only might we be potentially assisting to prevent those around us from heading into a dark space, but we might also save ourselves at the same time. I recently attended a great session with Matt Church, Motivational Speaker, who suggests that when you want to achieve something, start with the smallest possible version of the task, attach it to a habit or routine and celebrate it once you are done.

So rather than just doing RU OK this day – let’s make it RU OK Everyday. We need each other now, more than ever, to remain connected and experience a sense of belonging to our communities. I encourage to check in with your colleagues, team mates, friends, families and neighbours and give a little of your emotional energy. I know that we all have challenges right now, but let’s band around each other, because you just never know when a conversation can change a life.

If you need to talk, have concerns, or would like support or assistance on how to start these conversations, we are always here to help.
